“Sean!” Carly Wicks yelled out of the open front door.
She promptly slammed it and retired to the lounge sofa in her boyfriend Sean’s house. He had done it again, just gone shifty and run off, leaving her in limbo. Honestly she didn’t know why she put up with him and neither did her friends and family. Then again she knew he’d be back a few hours later back to normal, that’s what kept her going.
Sure enough six hours later just she returned from the minute mart to find him slouched on the sofa watching a DVD.
“Sean, you can’t just run out whenever you feel like it, it just isn’t on.”
“Carly, I can do what I want,” he replied bluntly.
“Sean, stop trying to be, oww,” she winced in pain clutching her stomach.
“You ok,” Sean said jumping up to help her.
“Yeah, it’s gone now.”
The pair of them curled up together on the sofa watching the DVD until it was early evening. Carly felt the pain in her stomach a few times more during the film but didn’t mention it. However, as she stood up to go and prepare their dinner she doubled up in pain once again.
“Look you’re not ok are you?” Sean showed a surprisingly caring side which he never revealed to many people, “We’re taking Charlie’s cab to the hospital he said, referring to the black cab outside.
“No I’m fine and you’re not allowed to drive his cab, you know what happened last time.”
“Fine then,” Sean walked promptly over to Carly and scooped her up in his arms.
She kicked and screamed as he carried her to the cab and shoved her in the back of it.
Neither of them was prepared for what they were told at the hospital.
“Initially we thought you had appendicitis but out scans show that your appendix is fine. You are in fact in labour.”
“Labour, but I’m not pregnant?” Carly panicked.
“In fact Carly you are full term, nine months pregnant. It is possible for people to be unaware of pregnancies especially if they gain no weight and their periods continue.”
“But nine months. Nine months ago I was still with my ex-husband, oh my god, you’re telling me I’m having his baby,” Carly spluttered?
“Well yes if he was your only sexual partner at that time then yes it must be his baby because you are definitely carrying a full term healthy baby. I will be back soon to move you to maternity.”
“Sean. I need you to leave now forever or make the decision to support me. I understand that it is tough but I can’t be to-ing and fro-ing with a baby. Oh oww,” she winced as her contractions came and went once more as a nurse began to wheel her to maternity.
Sean stopped for a moment and showed a great concentration that he didn’t normally show. He was spontaneous and often made spur of the moment choices but this time he was thinking about the consequences. A worried Carly winced in pain again and breathed deeply convinced Sean would go. She didn’t hold it against him though because there was no way se could ask him to do this. Putting herself in his shoes she knew that she would run a mile.
Suddenly the reality hit her; she was having a baby, she was going to be a Mum, the baby was Nicco’s. She hadn’t seen him since the last argument they had before their divorce nine months ago.
“I’ll stay,” Sean replied matter of factly.
“Wha’, agghhh!” Carly screamed again and a nurse rushed over.
Sean came closer and held her hand as the nurse informed her she could see the baby’s head, “I’ll stay, with you and the baby.”
Carly felt a grin form on her face and then she gave one lat push and gave birth to her child. The child, a baby girl, was placed into Carly’s arms in a crisp white towel covered in blood and other goo.
“She’s beautiful,” Carly exclaimed and looked up at Sean, “Will you call my Dad for me please. I bet he’d love to see his granddaughter,” she choked on the last word as though she couldn’t quite believe it.
Sean got up and left the room as a nurse enquired if she had any names for her daughter. Carly realised she had no ideas whatsoever and made a mental note to let her Dad and Sean to help with the decision. Another nurse came and took the girl from her and carried her to a small bath in the corner of the room. She bathed he carefully cleaning her skin to reveal a lovely dark cocoa Mediterranean colour, she had inherited that from her father.
About five minutes later after Carly had dressed her baby in a regulation hospital baby grow Sean returned to the room.
“It’s dark.”
“Sorry?” Carly enquired Sean’s comment.
“It’s not white is it? You never told me it would be a fucking European tramp,” Sean ended his racist tirade and charged out.
Carly just stared at the door, cold, numb. How could he do that, say those things, to her child? Her motherly instinct kicked in fast, her daughter was only half an hour old and had already been subjected to racist abuse, a hate for Sean Slater filled her veins. Slowly she started to sob, tears drained her face a dripped onto her daughters face. As she saw her tears on the child’s cheek she wiped her eyes and hugged her closer. She was going to be strong for her baby. She had peace in knowing her family were on the way.
“Carly!” her Dad yelled rushing in accompanied by her step-mum Denise, step-sister Libby, brother Dean and auntie Pat.
“Carly,” 16 year old Libby began, “I’m not stupid and get the whole baby slash sex thing but how did you end up with a baby when you weren’t pregnant? You took that test remember?”
“I don’t know, I never knew I was I mean. Oh Dad, she’s Nicco’s baby. I don’t want him,” she looked confused and startled.
“I know darling,” Kevin patted his daughters head as he crouched over his granddaughter.
“Well I know you’ll be a great Mum Carly, and don’t forget you’ve got us to help,” Denise contributed.
Carly finally pulled herself together as Kevin sent Libby, Denise and Deano off on baby stuff duty. Then she remembered, a name, she could hardly ask Sean now she thought. Sadness flooded her once more. Was she that insignificant, that stupid to fall for it and let him do that to her?
Kevin saw the tears welling in her eyes and immediately headed over to comfort her, “Don’t worry Car’ Nicco’s not coming anyway near you.”
Carly shook her head and explained what had happened with Sean. She couldn’t help but resent her father slightly as he battled the urge to say I told you so. Had she been the only one blind enough not to see that he was a bad egg?
As her Dad embraced her she clenched her fists and told herself to snap out of this. This wasn’t about her, this was about her baby girl, it was her day. She’d suffered terrible abuse but she was none the wiser, she just needed her Mum to look out for her, look after her. She was being selfish, the baby needed her, any problems she had came next. She smiled subtly as she recalled her best friend Dawn saying that exact thing shortly after her daughter was born. Dawn wasn’t what you’d call natural mother; in fact she had hated the idea of motherhood and almost had an abortion twice. Carly and she had been at loggerheads when they first met and had somehow become friends.
Carly’s thoughts were driven back to a name every time she thought baby or baby girl. She still had no ideas whatsoever; she wanted something strong, feisty but still pretty; perhaps something to remind her of her late brother Jimbo? One thing was certain, she’d be a Wick’s.
“Amber Jaime Wicks,” Carly suddenly announced.
“What?” Kevin replied confused.
“That’s what I’m gonna call her. I thought Jaime would be good because it’s a bit like a tribute to Jimbo,” Carly bowed her head as though she was mourning as she mentioned her late brother’s name.
