Part 1:
In the Vic:
Dennis: see you later. i'm off to the bookies
Den: What about your breakfast? its important
Dennis:and the bookies is important to me. i already let andy down when i wasn't there when someone pushed him off a bridge. i'm not going to fail in the bookies after he left it to me. see you later
Den: Dennis...[goes into the kitchen] i don't know what to do with that lad
Chrissie: he was close to andy. they were mates. he knew him since he was 16. he is dealing with it in his own way
Den: yeah but he is not dealing with it well
Sharon:morning dad. chrissie. who is not dealing with what well.
Chrissie:dens just talking about dennis not dealing with andy's death well
Sharon: he needs a break. he gets up at 7. has a run. has his shower. heads to the bookies. stays there all day. comes back. goes to bed. a few days off will do him good.
Den:trouble is how do we convince him to go
Sharon: could try Pat and Dot. he loves Dot. he listens to her. Pat could tell him to take a break.
Den:i'll try that. see you later
Chrissie: Dennis will be fine.

Part 2: in the bookies
Dennis:morning Pat
Pat:morning Dennis. what time did you get here at
Dennis: about half 8
Pat:bookies don't open until 10. coming here first thing in the morning and staying here until last thing at night won't bring andy back
Dennis:i know that. i ain't stupid
Pat:if andy knew that leaving the bookies would do this to you - he would have left you something that didn't make you so worked up
Dennis:i am fine. your as bad as Den. i am fine - really i am. i'll be in the office. sorting out the books.
Pat:i am going to grab a cup of tea and snack from the cafe. what do you want?
Dennis:ah i'm fine. thanks pat
Pat:Dennis i ain't taking that for an answer. have you eaten your breakfast yet
Dennis:i ani't hungry
Pat:i'll take that as a no. i'll get you a nice surprise
----------------------- in the Laundrette
Dot:morning Den. what are you doing here at this hour of the morning
Den: i need to ask your advice about dennis
DOT: is he alright
Den: he is taking andy's death badly. he won't talk about it to me, chrissie, sharon, vicki. he spends all day at the bookies. he needs a break but convincing him of that is near impossible
Dot: do you want me to have a word with him
Den:will you? he loves you. you have been like a mum to him
Dot:yeah course i will
Den:thanks Dot
Pauline enters
Den:morning Pauline
Pauline: what are you up to?
Den. see you Dot.
Dot:i'll do that later.
Den:thanks again Dot

Pat:yeah. he is in the office. come through
Dot:[knocks at door] morning Dennis
Dennis:hey Dot. sit down. what can i do for you
Dot: just thought i'd see how you were
Dennis: den send ya
Dot:he asked me to have a word but i was coming anyway. i hardly see you out and about. your couped up here all day everyday.
Dennis: i am fine. if i was doing hardly work den would tell me off. he tells me off if i do too much. i can't win
Dot:there is a balance. spending all your time here won't bring him back.
Dennis:i know.
Dot:you are not allowing yourself to deal with it properley - to grieve. Dennis look at me - take a break. just a few days.
Dennis: i have dealt with it
Dot: a few days off won't hurt you. everyone is worried about you - me, Den, Chrissie Sharon. Vicki, Pat. I am not going to force you into doing something. just think about what i said. you know where i am if you want to talk.
Dennis:thanks
Dot: see you around. [she gives him a peck on the cheek]. we are all here for you if you want.
Dennis sits at the table thinking all about what Dot has said.

Den:ain't seen you in this part of the world before. here you go
Woman: don't live around here
Den:what brings you to this part.
Woman:i heard a mate of mine from when i was a kid lives around here. ain't seen him in years.
Den:maybe i might know him
Woman:oh yeah
Den:lived around here most of my life. whats his name
Woman:rickman...dennis rickman
Den:Dennis
Woman:do you know him?

Sharon:here you go. on me. for looking after the bookies at such short notice. we all appreciate it.
Pat:cheers love. he needed a break. it won't do him any harm
phone rings
Sharon:hello..Queen Vic. Sharon speaking
Dennis:just letting you know i arrived and i am in me hotel room now.
Sharon:whats the weather like? dad, chrissie and vicki are out
Dennis:just let them know i got up here ok
Sharon:will do. you enjoy yourself
Dennis:see you sharon
Sharon:bye dennis
Pat:was that dennis
Sharon:yeah he had just arrived in his hotel room
Den enters
Den:did dennis phone yet
Sharon: yeah just spoke
den:did you mention the woman to him?
Sharon:no but i wanted to. he has a right to know
Pat:what woman is this
den: a young woman came in here earlier. about an hour after dennis left. anyway when i told her that i was his dad she shot off immediately.
Pat:did she leave her name, number, address anything
Den: all she said was that she didn't think dennis knew his dad otherwise he wouldn't have been put into care
Pat:are you going to tell him when he gets back?
Den:what will i say? might bring up bad or good memories of care. he has never spoke to me about growing up in foster care - Paula Rickman - hardly anything about his life under the age of 25. you have seen how badly andys death affected him. what if this drags up stuff for him that. don't know what to do for him
Pat:just show him that you are there for him and you love him and that you will be there for him no matter what. night Den
Den:thanks Pat. Oh Pat
Pat:yeah
Den:don't mention this to anyone. don't want dennis to hear about our mystery woman from anyone else
Pat:no problem. night

Jen:no liver failure. anyway that ain't fair. she has a drink problem. she wants to see you
Dennis:forget it! it ain't the only problem she has got. anyway its nothing got to do with me
Sharon: your sister. i thought your mother was dead
Dennis: Paula's daughter. Paula Rickman is dead to me.
Den: why didn't you say anything before?
jen: Dennis she is your mum. she needs your help.
Dennis:As i have said before she is not my mum. she made that quite clear. i'm going to the bookies.
Jen: what gamble your problems away
Dennis: i'll see you later Den.
jen: thats it then.
Den: leave him cool down. he is not going to gamble his money away. the bookies - its his. his mate Andy left it to him in his will.
Jen: Andy Hunter. i better apologise to Dennis. i bet he took the news about Andy badly. they were mates. Dennis never had many mates but Andy - more like brothers. thanks. i'll go after him

In the bookies:
Jen: Can i have a word.
Dennis: if you mention her name here you are out
Jen: i was sorry to hear about Andy. it must be hard for you. i knew you two were mates.
Dennis: yeah we were.
jen: will you consider seeing her. 5 minutes Dennis. she is ill
Dennis: think i'll throw a party in honour.
Jen: thats cruel
Dennis: thats cruel. she told me she wished i was dead. that she'd never had me. that i was a curse to everyone and i deserve all the pain and suffering i get.
Jen: she'd never
Dennis: maybe not to you butshe did to me.i have proof. do you want to see it. come on and i'll give you prrof. she wrote it to me and sent it back with all the letters i wrote to both of you when i was in prison. come on i'll show you. kept them as my little reminder. Pat can you keep an eye on this place

In the Vic:
Dennis: come on then. if proof is what you want - proof is what youi get!
Den: Dennis are you alright.
Dennis: blissful
Dennis heads into his room and picks out a box from his wardrobe. he starts shaking
Den: Dennis. its going to be ok
Dennis: here is your proof. read it and then you'll see what she said to me and what i meant to her. i don't care if i'm being selfish here but i am not willing to put myself through that again. i need air. i'll be back in a while.
Chrissie: do you want someone to go with you?
Dennis: i am fine. just need my own space.
Jen sits down and reads the letter addressed to Dennis
It reads:
Dennis,
so your stuck inside for 3 years. thank God a blessing. we are never going to visit you. i hope you die in there. you have nothing going for you. i wished i never had you. you are good for nothing except maybe for my boyfriends to give you a good battering to. stay away from me and Jen. i never want you to contact either of us again. you deserve all the pain and suffering you get. its your fault you take after your father. here are all the letters you sent. don't bother sending anymore. i hate you and i always have. its because of putting up with you that i drink
Paula"
jen: no wonder he hates her. its horrible. i can't believe she wrote it.
Den: the poor lad. no wonder he said that she was dead. i don't blame him.
Chrissie: Den its lashing rain. Dennis has been out for an hour in the rain. he will get a cold. go after him
Den: i'll go out looking for him now.

In the Laundrette:
Dot: do you want to tell me whats wrong?
dennis: i am fine
Dot: yeah and pigs fly. whats the matter Dennis?
Dennis: Vicki and Sharon aren't my only sisters. i have 1 more. Jen. she is on my mo.....Paula's daughter
Dot: your mum.
Dennis: paula Rickman ain't my mum. anyway Jen is here in Walford. wants me to visit Paula. She is pretty sick apparantley.
Dot: i am sorry to hear that.
Dennis:i'm not. now i have old memories in my head that i never wanted to see again and i can't escape from them.
dot: talkingv about them might help.
Dennis: i don't know if i can. i have learned to keep them in for so long now. i don't know what to do
Dot: don't keep your feelings bottled up. How do you feel about Paula
Dennis: part of me realy hates her. she told me she wished i was dead and that she never had me. she let her boyfriends beat me up when i was a kid. but then part of me cares for her a little bit. before she drank. she was good to me. i remember once i was about 3 we went to the zoo. iloved it..
Dot: go and see her only if it feels right for you. you have to do right by yourself before you can start doing right by others.
Dennis: thanks Dot. you have really helped.
