Part 1/
Please read and reply
Kat handed Alfie the crumpled piece of paper and watched as yet another tear rolled down his pale cheek as he blinked, trying to clear his vision. Alfie closed his eyes, after taking in what was written, and could clearly picture his Nana say those exact words to him… ‘Make my Alfie happy.’ A few minutes past before anything was said, the room was deadly silent, all that could be heard was the crackling log fire. Alfie cleared his throat before finally speaking.
“Um… when did she give this to you?”
“Just before she… y ‘know.” Kat said, not feeling able to finish her sentence. “She told me not to open it until after the funeral.”
“Make me happy? Does she think you’re some sort of miracle worker or something?”
“What you were saying the other day… about going to America…”
“No Kat, I can’t.”
“Why not? You’ve got all that money from the races; you might as well spend it on something worthwhile. Besides, there’s nothing keeping you here anymore… is there?”
Alfie glanced up at Kat before looking back down at the note.
“I suppose not. It don’t seem right though… Nana aint been gone a week and already I’m thinking about packing up and going on holiday!”
“It doesn’t have to be a holiday Alfie… you’ve got the chance to make a fresh start.”
Kat could hardly believe what she was saying. Here she was telling the man she loved more than life itself to move half way across the world.
“Is that what you want?”
Kat took a deep breath and swallowed away the tears, which were threatening to fall. Reaching out and placing her shaking hand over his she gave him the best reassuring smile she could manage.
“It’s what Nana would want.”
Alfie nodded and squeezed her hand. Kat closed her eyes and leant her head against his shoulder and soon felt Alfie’s head resting against hers. Kat took a deep breath and inhaled Alfie’s familiar, comforting smell. In those few minutes that they sat together in silence she took in everything, the softness of his loud shirt against her cheek, the way his hands felt as his thumb gently grazed over hers and the way their bodies fitted together so perfectly… as if they were made for each other. Little did Kat know that Alfie was doing exactly the same, knowing that this would be the last time they would be in each other’s arms.
